Few things make me more happy than fresh office supplies.
- Somebody not me I swear
Hello darkroom my old friend*
Back on my birthday, I wrote, “my goal for this year is to shoot and develop at least four rolls on my toy cameras. I also want to build a pinhole camera and get some images from that. I also plan to publish a zine of my toy camera photos.”
And hey, here’s a success story! While I haven’t shot four toy camera rolls or built a pinhole camera (yet), I did put out the zine. You can see all the photos and most of the text on my new Flickr account. Family photos are still at the old Flickr account. If you want a paper copy of the zine, let me know. If you are in Colorado Springs I’d be happy to give you a copy. Otherwise, I’d probably charge $5 for shipping and “handling” (i.e., dragging my butt to the post office). I’m happy with how they turned out and happy that I did a thing I said I was going to do.
But it doesn’t stop there. I may not have shot much new on the toy camera, but since the start of this year I have shot about a dozen rolls of film on about five different cameras.
I have a few projects underway. One is documenting the demolition of the Martin Drake Power Plant in Colorado Springs.
Another is Shooks Run, a stream that runs through our neighborhood through culverts and other human-made structures.
And a third is taking portraits; I’m starting with friends but hoping to start taking street portraits soon. Pictured are all Substack subscribers, Russ & Pat, and Han.
You can find more photos on the Flickr site above and on Instagram where I’m @bevedog.
This is also a good place to mention my dad’s photography. He had a big show at Denver’s Gallery 6 in May of his portraits of veterans. You can see more at his website. The gallery opening was a great event because so many of the people he photographed showed up, and I also got to see Pat (pictured above) and his father, Dave, who is a Vietnam War veteran. My friend, Steve, who is also an Air Force vet, and Han and our family (except Nick, still in Wisconsin) were able to go too. Really proud of my dad, the whole event was an outpouring of love and appreciation flowing many different directions.
Hope you are all doing well. Expect more photo posts in the future.
*I’m not really using a darkroom (yet) but this was too good a line to pass up.
